What to expect at your first physiotherapy assessment

Booking physiotherapy for the first time? Here is how an assessment usually works, what to bring, and how to make the most of it.

Whether you are recovering from a sports injury, managing a stiff back or simply want to move more comfortably, physiotherapy starts in the same place: a careful assessment. Knowing what happens in that first session can make it feel a lot less daunting.

It starts with a conversation

Your physiotherapist will ask about what brought you in, when it started, what makes it better or worse, and how it affects your daily routine, work and activities. They will also ask about your general health and any previous injuries or treatment. The more openly you share, the better they can understand your needs.

Looking at how you move

Next comes the physical part of the assessment. Depending on your concern, this may include looking at your posture, testing how far and how comfortably you can move, checking strength and balance, and gently examining the affected area. Your physiotherapist will explain what they are doing as they go — and you can ask them to pause or stop at any time.

Agreeing a plan together

Once the assessment is complete, your physiotherapist will talk you through what they found and suggest a plan. This might combine hands-on techniques, therapeutic exercises to practise at home and practical advice for your everyday routine. Good plans are agreed together, so ask questions until you feel clear about the approach.

How to prepare

  • Wear comfortable clothing that lets you move freely and gives access to the area of concern.
  • Bring any relevant reports, scans or a list of medication you take.
  • Jot down your questions and goals beforehand — for example, getting back to a sport or sitting comfortably at work.
  • Arrive a few minutes early so you are not rushed.

At Olympiads Wellness Clinic, physiotherapy is delivered by our registered physiotherapy team. If you are unsure whether physiotherapy is right for you, get in touch and we will talk it through.
